The Tierfreunde Münster association was founded in 1983, and is a member of the European federation of animals and nature protection. Since 1995 an animal shelter owned by the association has been exsisting on a 5,000 square-meter plot in Münster- Handorf. After completing necessary renovation and reconstruction, the animal shelter was opened in 2001. The activity is financed by the contributions of the members and donations. There is no support by the public authorities. The association employees are animal caretakers as well as two additional individuals added to the staff in order to support the day to day operations of the animal shelter. The steering commitee counsel as well as the additional helpers work on a voluntary basis.

Specifics oft he shelter: We are taking care of all the accomodations for the animals the best and most species appropriate way possible. In our shelter the animals are not kept in shelters because this disturbs the social behaviour and leads to solitude and aggressivity behaviour. The animals are kept in groups in ordert o promote natural behaviour.
